The Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera

Finding the perfect beach read is essential to a great South Walton beach vacation.  This book is for you! The Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera explains the history of the emerald coast from Gulf Shores to Panama City starting in the late 1800’s until the BP oil spill in 2010.  The author, Harvey Jackson, is a neighbor of mine in Old Seagrove. He is a wonderful story teller.  The book is interesting and entertaining.

Some of the highlights that I enjoyed learning about in the book are:

30A History Book

Emerald Coast History Book

  • The development of 30A
  • The Butler General Store, now known as the Red Bar
  • C.H. McGee, the original developer of Seagrove
  • The deal between Florida and Alabama for the Perdido Key Bridge
  • How this area gained popularity after WWII
  • Development of Highway 331 and Highway 98

If you are looking for a good Spring or Summer read, add this book to your list.  You can pick up a copy in Seaside at Sundog Books or on Amazon.
